Derwentside College Football Team
by Angela Cummings - Friday, 5 March 2010, 03:44 PM

The whole kit & caboodle...

...to kick start the official Derwentside College football team!

An inspired idea from three Life Coaches from Derwentside College has recently created the all-new Derwentside College football team. In partnership with Leisureworks ‘Get Active’ project, the College has created a healthy way for students to work towards the Government’s target of increasing physical activity for young adults.

In a joint attempt to address health inequalities in Derwentside, the Life Coaches at Derwentside College and Bobby Hewitson, from Leisureworks, joined forces to promote the scheme. Mr Hewitson soon organised funding, via Sport England, to provide footballs, coaching equipment, and even a referee for the newly-formed football team, which has young lads from curriculum areas, such as Engineering, Uniformed Services and Sport taking part in the matches. The results of all this time and effort are already becoming evident, with Derwentside College winning a game against the top team – Gateshead College, with the final whistle blowing on the result of 1-0.

The Life Coaches are also aiming to tackle other issues facing young people, namely ‘Respect – you’ve got to give it to earn it!’, as well as building community projects within the students’ learning environments and study time. With praise being received from other colleges and football clubs on the College’s team sportsmanship, the projects are both proving to be highly effective and sustainable.

Bobby Hewitson, Lifestyle Manager at Leisureworks, said, “Working in partnership with Derwentside College has strengthened the ‘Get Active’ campaign, as well as improving mental health and social cohesion amongst students. Building a community is often a by-product of physical activity, especially when teams are formed. Strong elements of this are evident at Derwentside College with more and more students wanting to be involved in both the football and netball teams.”

Proving Mr Hewitson’s point, team captain of the football team, Greg Dawson from Stanley, said, “It’s been fantastic representing the College at the last 7 matches, where our teamwork and skills have really started to shine through. We are hoping to be really successful this season and raise the College’s sporting profile even further”.

Anyone interested in seeing Derwentside College’s new football team in action can see them at their next away match against East Durham College, on 10 March 2010.

Following matches:

17 March at Home (Belle Vue Leisure Centre) to Sunderland.

24 March away to Tyne Met College.
